A beautifully packaged double CD, East West - Music For Big Bands is the saxophonist/composer’s latest Origin Records project, released November 15, 2019. Leading Jazz Journalist Andrew Gilbert says “East West – Music for Big Bands embraces multiplicity. It’s not either/or, it’s and/also. It’s beauty AND burn, intense swing AND sweet balladry, all united under Zilber’s commanding and ever-expanding creative purview.” Tackling an ambitious, once-in-a-lifetime project with two big band recording sessions – one in New York, the other in San Francisco – Zilber gathers, from his extensive music community, two groupings of powerful, empathetic playing peers, their collective commitment to support, share, and create, shining through these 14 tracks. Featured are 8 Zilber originals and 6 of his arrangements of classic songs, including “Joshua,” “Fall,” “Skylark” and “Somewhere Over The Rainbow.”

about

One of Hoagy Charmichael's most moving songs (and a favorite song of Zilber's father), in this version Zilber sets the tune as a tale of two feelings, a funky Gadd-like march tempo juxtaposed with a lushly reharmonized telling of the melody in ballad style. Grammy winner Doug Beavers and Jon Hatamiya are featured on melody and the Funky Gadd solo section respectively, while Zilber softly and sweetly wends his way through the rich solo changes of the ballad. First call sax man Sheldon Brown caps the proceedings with a spiky Dolphy-style foray over the outro
