A beautifully packaged double CD, East West - Music For Big Bands is the saxophonist/composer’s latest Origin Records project, released November 15, 2019. Leading Jazz Journalist Andrew Gilbert says “East West – Music for Big Bands embraces multiplicity. It’s not either/or, it’s and/also. It’s beauty AND burn, intense swing AND sweet balladry, all united under Zilber’s commanding and ever-expanding creative purview.” Tackling an ambitious, once-in-a-lifetime project with two big band recording sessions – one in New York, the other in San Francisco – Zilber gathers, from his extensive music community, two groupings of powerful, empathetic playing peers, their collective commitment to support, share, and create, shining through these 14 tracks. Featured are 8 Zilber originals and 6 of his arrangements of classic songs, including “Joshua,” “Fall,” “Skylark” and “Somewhere Over The Rainbow.”

about

This tour de Force is a true reworking of the fabled and immortal "Trane Changes" heard on Countdown, Giant Steps, Fifth House and others> After a Coplandesque Horn intro and a floating waltz, the piece transitions into a 3 part-contrapuntal melody, including a hint of the song's genesis, and then taking the progression through 6 different keys and a sax "battle" among Zilber, Christian McBride alto man Todd Bashore and Altoist Bruce Williamson, ending with a dazzling trading of 4s, followed by the whole band trading with Drummer Marcinko, followed by the 3-part melody, the brass chorale, a lovely solo by pianist Mike Holober and finally, a wink and a nod to the Coltrane source material.
